Wellness Wednesday - Not feeling well

It finally happened. After months of dodging it, I have finally been hit with the nasty cold that it seems like everyone in my office had. I was almost ready to throw a small celebration that I made it through the season without one cold. It would of been epic. But no, it HAD to show up on a Monday to complicate things.

It make me wonder if all of the stress and craziness of the move made my immune system weak which allowed me to get sick. I have gotten past many colds and sicknesses over the winter that R got from the kids. He was once again sick and almost over it when out of nowhere my cold hit me.

Getting the cold reminds me why I need to chill out as best as I can in stressful situations. I was able to steer clear of other bugs and viruses when I managed better. Now that I let myself succumb to the stress I opened myself up for germs.

This is reminder to myself and all of you to keep stress as minimal as possible to keep the rest of you healthy. Do something nice for yourself and allow yourself to relax during stressful times. I often forget to do this myself and here I am feeling terrible with this icky cold.

How do you maintain a healthy immune system?

The Uninspired Blogger

Monday always strikes me as a day to start over and make good from anything that happened last week. This mostly falls into the work category for me as I always seem to leave the negatives of my work week in my office Friday afternoon hoping Monday will be better. This week I am not as thrilled about Monday coming around, as it means change. I don't do so hot with change lately.

If you followed me over the weekend on Twitter and Instagram you saw little peaks into what I was up to. Moving. This isn't something new for me, as I was a military kid and embraced it as a child. Today this marks my 4th move in 3 years since moving to New York.  A new chapter to me and R's lives as we join households. This should be exciting right? I am feeling more overwhelmed then excited.

I am really exited to be living full time with R as our lives change together, but on the other hand there are going to be a lot of challenges in the upcoming months. One of those challenges is children. I am joining households with R and his 2 boys who he has every other week. The next challenge is finding another home by June so we can have more space. Yes that will take me to FIVE moves in 3 years. Is my hair gray yet folks?

With all of this excitement going on in my life, I feel very uninspired lately. My ideas are not flowing as smoothly as they were just a few weeks ago. (I did write most of those puppies down though!) I am hoping the change won't take to much out of me, so I can come back stronger then ever here with all of my new ventures. I still want to keep bringing you all local posts. I don't have anything exciting this week due to all the moving shenanigans. I will be launching a new design in the next week, which I am very excited about.

I am hoping with all of this change will come clarity for my future. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. I'm gonna hang in there if you guys will. Deal? I am so grateful for each and every one of you. Now tell me about your crazy moving stories, or what you did over the weekend. Inspire me.

H54F: Freebie Edition

It's no secret that I enjoy the freebie things in life. Although I am on a freebie freeze at the moment due to some address changes coming up, and lord knows I don't want to miss out on anything because it was sent to my old address. People often ask me how I do it. What are my "secrets"? Well today I wanted to share with you my top 5 favorite places to scope out freebies to review.

Remember not everything that you get for free is "free". There is often a little work involved when you get some of the better freebies. These things include writing reviews, promoting on social media, hosting parties, and just all around letting people know about this product. If you are cool with that then you are already one step in the right direction. These are not in any particular order. They are all great sites!

One
Crowdtap - Crowdtap is a Social Influence Marketing platform. What that means is brands ask you questions both about their products and your every day lives to gain research for marketing their products. You have 2 actions: Quickhits and Missions/Challenges. The Quickhits are short questions you can click your answer to where the Missions/Challenges are asking you to do something. All free samples and parties come out of these. I have gotten some great products to sample and review through this site. Bonus to this site is getting entered into drawings every month for gift certificates. I paid for Christmas last year on Amazon gift cards alone last year from this site.

Two
Influenster - You all know how much I love Influenster. This is a site where you can go and review, ask, and answer questions about products. You connect all of your social media accounts to give you an influence "reach". The higher your reach the more chances you get at receiving VoxBoxes. These are boxes full of full size products. You have all kinds of badges you can unlock by doing tasks. Again the more involved you are the better chance you have at getting into another campaign. Check out my VoxBox reviews herehere and here.

Three
BzzAgent - This is such a fun site. It is survey based so you need to keep them up to date to keep your "bzzscore" high. The higher your score the better chances you have of being invited into a campaign. I have gotten lots of food items as well as beauty items from this site. I am currently in a campaign for Cashew Milk and a new Electric Razor. Lots of great stuff to be had here! Stay on top of those surveys and you will be "bzzing" in no time!

Four
House Party -  If you like to host parties and you want to try out new products, this is the site for you. I have been on the site since January of 2013 and just wrapped up my 5th party with them. There is no real science to how you get picked for a party but I feel like if you do everything you are asked to do you have a better chance. When you are chosen to be a host you receive a party pack filled with goodies for you and your guests. Things I have received in these packs to help you plan your party are: decorations, recipes, games, T-shirts, and samples.

Five
Social media - Believe it or not, social media is one of the easiest ways to get free samples. Most of the time when you request a sample this way there is no obligation to do anything once you receive it. I have a separate Facebook page dedicated to just freebies. I have "liked" hundreds of brand pages because this is where the samples come from.  Here they will announce when they are giving away stuff and how you get get it.

So there you have it guys! Get yourself set up with these sites and you will be on your way to freebie heaven! Have a great Friday!

Wellness Wednesday: Water

Everything around us is built up with science. There are millions of molecules buzzing around us at all times. Our body is made up of molecules, and the biggest element is H2O. Water, for all you folks who don't use the scientific part of your brain. Because of this, it is super important to keep our bodies hydrated. Today I wanted to talk about the benefits of water and why you should be drinking more.

As a society, water is often passed over for sugary and caffeinated drinks. What we don't think about is the drinks we are choosing in place of water can often make us dehydrated and sluggish. Water is needed to help flush the body of toxins, and when it's not present we aren't getting everything moving. During the day we should all be consuming half of our body weight in ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, you should be drinking 70 ounces of water a day or roughly 8.5 cups of water.

This sounds harder then it is. What I have done to maintain my water intake daily, is purchased a fun water bottle that has the ounces marked on it. I drink four 20oz bottles of water a day. It goes a lot quicker then I thought. I drink one 20 ounce bottle before I go to work. I refill 2 more times at work and then drink the last 20 ounces after work once I get home.

I have been doing this now for a few weeks. The changes I have noticed are amazing! I have been having a lot of trouble with acne on my face and back. My face and back are FINALLY clearing up. I notice my skin looking brighter and I look more awake. I am not as hungry so I am not snacking as often in between meals. The bloat I have been feeling is going away. So many benefits come out of drinking water.

Do you drink enough?

Local Lovin!

Are you new to your area? Looking to meet new people? Tired of the same things day in and day out? Why not try attending local events? What better way to meet people in your community then to attend something local? I wish I would of taken my own advice 2 years ago when I was moping around with nothing to do weekend after weekend. Sure I had my co-workers but sometimes it's nice to spend time with people who don't know what you do day in and day out at work.

Over the past 4 days I have attended 3 fun events. Most of them were free and were a great opportunity to meet new people. I was able to find all of these events on the Facebook Events page. I clicked on "Events Near Me" and it listed everything going on in my city and in cities nearby. Once you find something that interests you, you can "join" so it will be added to your Facebook calendar and will be reminded the day of so you don't miss it.

To give you an idea of some of the fun things you can find, I want to share with you the 3 events I attended and how they are fueling me to attend even  more in the future!

Thursday
I attended a trunk show at a local beauty bar. Avanti Boutique teamed up with Miel Beauty Bar to offer some beautiful spring dresses, jewelry, beauty products, and wine! Who doesn't like a good night of fashion, beauty and wine? Speaking of wine, Redhead Wine was featured and it was created by a local women. It was a wonderful sweet red wine. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to purchase my own bottle! Make sure you check out their sites!

Friday
Red is my new favorite! The Red Event that is. This was a fundraising event put on by the Hangar Aces to raise money for the local arts and especially the Hangar Theater. The Hangar Aces are a group of young professionals (Ages 21-39) who put on events to help raise awareness of the arts as well as offer social and networking events for young professionals. The event was so much fun! Everyone comes dressed in red and there was music, wine, beer, raffles for fabulous gift baskets, and lots of networking! I wore my favorite red wedges (and paid for it later) and had a great time mingling and drinking wine.

Sunday
There's no party like a tea party! A local community center put on an afternoon tea fundraiser. It was fancy! So pretty and such a great time with friends. We may have been the youngest ones there but it was great. The tea sandwiches were great and each round of tea was a new tea to try. Totally going to this again next year cause who can pass up mini everything and tea?

So how was your weekend?

H54F: What's going on!

We made it to Friday. It couldn't have come fast enough! Today I want to talk about 5 things from this week that I have been working on. I am so excited about where this blog is headed.

One
I am so exited for my new venture on my blog. If you read my post last Sunday I rambled on about my ideas. I am working on building a relationship with my local community. This is so exciting for me because I live in such a diverse and fun little city. So much to offer and so much inspiration comes out of where I live. Stay tuned for my weekly features on local spots.

Two
Speaking of working with local businesses I decided yesterday to debut my first review post about a local pub and eatery. I think it went well. I was so happy to see the response from the owners on social media as well as the traffic the post created.

Three
Now that I am working on becoming a part of my community I am looking for events to attend, volunteer positions, and classes. I am particularly pysched (does anyone still use this word?) about this because if you recall my February goal was to meet new people, and this is a great way to accomplish that.

Four
Speaking of goals, I wrapped up March goals but never talked about my April goals. My plans changed a little with my move and such so that changed my goals. I have decided to make April all about finding a hobby that makes me happy. What that lead me to was this new page (pun intended lol) on my blog. I have not been this excited for a new project in a long time. I am finally taking the steps I need to make this blog my happy place. I am so excited for it and what you will all think!

Five
Tonight I am volunteering at my first event! It is to support local theater, which I love. It is called the Red Event and I will be helping out with my new friend Nikki. So excited for this because it gets me out on a Friday night and the group I am volunteering with is a young professional group so I can meet some new peeps my age! I look forward to writing all about it next week. I really hope you all have a fantastic weekend ahead! Spring has sprung ya'll!

Local Posting: Red's Place

Hey all. I mentioned on Sunday that I was going to start bringing some local posts to my blog each week. I want to connect with my community and to give potential visitors a taste of what they can expect if they visit the Finger Lake region in New York. I wanted to go ahead and get that started this week as I visited a new to me restaurant over the weekend that was AH-MAZ-ING.

Red's Place, a unique dining pub has it all. A bar. Great menu. Great help. Me and R decided to catch a late lunch when we were shopping on the Commons on Sunday. It was 2pm and the weather was perfect so we were not able to get a table outside, but the interior was enough to make us forget all about the tables outside. The light fixtures are made of mason jars, and the wood on the bar from an old barn. There is a mural of NYC on the wall and the table tops were beautiful.

Being it was a warm day, we both decided to go with one of the many beers they had on tap. They have a nice beer list, including seasonal and local beers. We were brought our beers and 2 mason jars of water. I don't know about you, but mason jars are the way to my heart. They are so versatile and you can dress them up or down.

After a few minutes of deciding on a meal, we decided to try a few items and share them. We ended up with 3 Rosebuds (chinese five spiced bbq pulled short rib sliders with coleslaw), A Wild Thing Flatbread (wild mushrooms, rosemary, prosciutto and fontina) and a basket of steak fries. We mostly wanted fries because of the cute little basket they came in.

The food came really quickly and I have to admit it was gone just as fast. Everything was really good. The pulled bbq was tender with flavor and the flatbread was soft and crunchy in all the right places. The french fries were what any french fry tastes like to me. Nothing fancy, but hit the spot!

While R paid the bill I hit the bathroom. I have to say it is one of the nicest restaurant bathrooms I have been in a long time. Very clean and a full on changing table for mothers who need to tend to an infant. That gets a gold star in my book!

Overall we enjoyed out experience. The food was good. The place was clean. The staff were great. For both of us to eat our bill was just under $40. I would say that is just above average for Ithaca.

If you would like to visit Red's Place they are located at:
107 N. Aurora Street ("Restaurant Row")
Ithaca, NY 14850

You can check out their menu here -----> Red's Place Menu

Stay tuned for more local posts! If you are in central NY and would like to work with me, please send me an email! I would love to work with you!

How to protect yourself from Identity Theft

People will never seize to amaze me. Just when I think it can't get any worse, it does. I took a small break from this blog and social media last week due to an amazement that came in a bad form. I had my identity compromised. Even though we live in a digital world these days, we also must remember that everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is accessible online. Even if you do not shop online or electronically pay your bills, chances are your banking institute is online.

I was only informed I had an issue when my bank sent me a new debit card. My current card was getting ready to expire so I thought nothing of it. I looked at it quickly and thought the numbers looked different but thought no more about it until my bank called me. They had asked about a check coming through that they thought was suspicious. Thankfully I was aware of this particular check, but that did spark my thought about the new debit card.

After speaking to another bank rep, I was informed my identity had been compromised and there was suspicious activity on my account. (Funny how they never called me about those issues..). I got everything sorted out and my new card activated before it really hit me. Someone had access to my personal information and could have potentially did some damage to my finances and my name.

Identity theft is a real thing and can happen to ANYONE. I thought I was doing a thorough job of keeping all of my personal and financial information safe. I check my accounts every couple of days to make sure everything looks kosher. Just like that things can get scary. For this reason alone I asked lots of questions on how to do an ever better job at keeping my identity safe. Here are a few tips I learned so I wanted to throw them your way:

Change passwords regularly. A lot of financial institutes already make you do this, but if they don't do it yourself. It really can make the difference.

Credit Reports. Get yourself signed up for a program that provides you with quarterly reports. A lot of these programs will also alert you if you have any suspicious activity on your account. I have a program with my Discover credit card but unfortunately it is still in my parents address so I did not get any word of the issues going on. #fail

Protection. Similar to the reports I get from Discover, there are programs out there that are strictly in place to monitor your identity. I am personally looking into using Life Lock. A co-worker suggested it when I mentioned this little adventure. It offers detection, alerts, and restore services. There is a small fee a month but they will fight for you if you ever have an identity issue. Truth be told just because your bank got hacked doesn't mean your bank won't fight you tooth and nail with overdrawn charges and such. I know someone who was sent to collections from their bank and it was the banks fault. Crazy stuff out there folks!

Beware of Scams. This sounds like a no brainer but there are so many scams out there asking for your personal information.  Being in the freebie business (yes I consider it a business.. it takes lots of hard work!) I have to be very careful with who I give my info to. If it seems to good to be true, chances are it is a scam. There are new scams everyday and they are getting more and more believable so keep your guard up.

I hope this never happens to any of you, but if it does make sure you are prepared. Get yourself protected. This was such an eye opening experience for me and now I don't feel at all guilty to purchase a plan that will help me fight back had this been a serious threat.

Have you ever had your identity stolen or compromised? Were you prepared for it? I would love to hear how you handled this serious situation.

Sunday Rambles

Ahh Sunday. So nice to see you. I don't normally post on Sunday but today I felt like I had a lot to say and I wanted to just get it all out rather then wait until next week. Taking a bit of a break from the blog was nice for me. I didn't take the break for clarity but I certainly thought a lot about where I want my blog to go and what I'd like it to look like. I have been blogging almost a full year and really wasn't sure where my blog "fit in" and what I wanted to become of it.

This past week I really put into perspective what I wanted from this blog. I want to get gratification from knowing someone was able to read something I wrote and use it somewhere useful in their lives. I am definitely drifting slowly into the health and fitness world, but I don't want to be labelled as that one thing either. I was out and about today in this beautiful weather we are having in Central New York and thought about the city in which I live.

My city is a very health conscious place and there is always something to do here that links in with staying healthy and fitness. There are oodles of yoga studies and massage therapists. Health food stores and natural artisans making all kinds of soaps and green options. It is here in my city that brings all kinds of inspiration to my every day blogging.

By the time I hit my 1 year bloggy birthday on May 1st I want to be incorporating more local posts here on my blog. I want to share with the world some of the great things you can find and do here in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Anything from state parks, restaurants, wellness options, hospitality options. I want to dive into as many things as I can and bring a weekly segment here.

Summer is quickly approaching and this area is an amazing place to visit for a couples, girls weekends, or families. Whether you are a fellow neighbor or someone looking to explore the area I hope you will enjoy these weekly segments. A few things you can look forward to that I will be attending this coming week and writing about are:

4/16/2015 Avanti Trunk show at Miel Beauty Bar featuring Red Head Wine

4/17/2015 The Hangar Aces Red Event at the Hangar Theater

4/19/2015 3rd Annual Spring Tea Fundrasier at the Dryden Community Center

I also visited a newer restaurant in Ithaca today called Red's Place and will be writing about that as well!

If you are local to me and have an event coming up that you would like me to write about please send me an e-mail! I would love to work with you!

I hope you will enjoy these upcoming posts and have a great week!

After these messages I'll be right back...

Some of you may have noticed my absence this week here on the blog and on social media. Due to some unforseen issues I am going to be away from the blog for the rest of this week. I am planning to be back next week with my short girl series premiere I promised this week. Please bare with me and I will be back stronger then ever next week :)

Bulu Box - First Impression

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great holiday weekend if you celebrate Easter! I had the chance to spend it with my family and meet my new nephew who was born last weekend so it was a nice weekend for me. Now on with the blog..

Last month I decided to sign up for a 3 month subscription of Bulu Box. Bulu box is a subscription box curated towards health and fitness for only $10 a month. Because I have been focusing more lately on those topics I thought I would give it a shot. I realized over the weekend that I never posted my first impression. I received my first box on March 15th. Here's what I got!

biPro Instant Whey Protein Isolate Supplement in French Vanilla
I decided to take this shake in place of my normal shake one morning. I didn't mind the taste and it kept me feeling full for most of the morning. I felt a little hungry as I got closer to lunch time but for the most part it did the trick for me!

Shapeology Burn Blend Diatary Supplement
To be honest I have not tried this out yet. I am planning to do it this week and will share a quick thought on it later in the week. The only issue with this is it is only a one time sample so I am not sure I will be able to have a enough of an experience to see if I really liked it.

HELPS Organic R&R Tea
I tried out one of these babies on day one of having the box. I think the taste was very herbal but wasn't bad. I can't say for sure that this relaxed me but I will try the other one and let you know if there is any differene.

Brightcore Nutrition: Sweet Wheat Raw Wheate Grass Juice Powder Capsules
I really need more alkalizing foods in my life so I am exited to try these out. I like that they are vegan and gluten free.

 Vita Perk in Vanilla
This is a product that you add to your coffee to add vitamins and minerals. I have not been drinking coffee lately so I do not have a review on this. I may try it out this week just to see if it has any effect.

Zestra Essential Arousal Oils
I have not tried this out but I like that it is hormone free. I have a lot of issues with hormones to begin with so anything claiming they don't use hormones get an A in my book!

I have to say I am pretty impressed with my first months box. It came with 6 products and 8 samples total with the 2 tea bags and 2 Vita Perk pouches. I need to give some of the products a test still but I was happy with the box. Another item not showed was a free 3 month subscription to Salted, an online cooking class resource. I am planning on taking advantage of that so I can try out some new stuff!

So what did you think? Worth the $10 a month? Do you receive Bulu Box? How do you like it?

If you sign up with my referral link you will get your second month FREE!

And then it was April

Well another month has come and gone and now it's time to see how it went. I spent most of March organizing and preparing myself for my move. That was my monthly goal. I can't say I kicked butt this month like I did last month. This is mostly because my move out date got pushed back to the end of April so I have more time to get it together.

Another goal was to keep on reading. I finished 2 books and started a third. I am feeling good in the reading department. I wasn't as social this month as I was last month. This was partially because the weather was nuts and I was trying to focus on my apartment and some personal issues.

March brought the first day of "Spring" and the Spring Blog Staycation. Even though March was pretty bi-polar with its weather swings, the Blog Staycation was pretty fabulous. You can read all about that here.

I have a few opportunities to write for a some other blogs, which is super exciting. Keep a lookout for that. I also have a new series or 2 that I will be unveiling this month. So yay for progress and growth here on the blog!

Now for my favorite part of March. All. The. Goodies.I fell in love with some new products and I want to share them with you! (I received all of these products for review purposes. All opinions are my own and are honest. The Pura D'Or is sponsored by Brandbacker)

Company: Pura D' Or (www.puradoroil.com)
The first thing I want to mention about this company is they are certified organic and no not test on animals. A win-win if you ask me! The conditioner contains no parabens, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), or harsh chemicals. It is made from 99% vegetable ingredients.

Product: Argan Oil Premium Organic Conditioner in Lavender Vanilla
The first thing I noticed when using this product is it smells AMAZING. The lavender and vanilla work really good together. The product itself its a creamy texture. The directions ask you to apply a small amount to your hand and work through your hair. Leave it on the hair for 2 minutes before washing out.

The outcome: The product worked in well to my hair. It never felt to oily or thick when applying. I left it on the full 2 minutes before washing it out. My hair felt very smooth, and again not oily. After showering I normally blow dry my hair, so I proceeded as normal. My hair looked straight, smooth, and very shiny. I really liked how it felt and made my hair look, until I went outside. My hair was full of static and was all sticking all over my face. That part bothered me because I am one of those people who can't stand my hair on my face.

The next time I washed my hair I used my regular conditioner and my hair seemed back to normal. Hoping it was a fluke I washed my hair on my next wash with the Pura D'Or conditioner and unfortunately my hair went right back to static city. Maybe it is the argan oil? Anyone have any ideas on what may of caused the static issue?

Product: Argan Oil for Body, Hair, and Skin Treatment
I love that this product comes on a glass bottle.  To use this product you can apply the oil as a daily moisturizer, morning and night as a treatment to heal, protect, and condition from head to toe.

The outcome: I have been using this as a hang moisturizer when I get up in the morning. I have applied it to my face at night a few times and I am surprised at how quickly my skin drinks it up. It leaves my skin feeling smooth and soft. I need to dabble more in using it on my breakouts to see if it helps at all. Will update you all on that in a few weeks!

Overall:  I think both of these products are high quality and can do amazing things for your skin and hair. I am still a little frustrated about the conditioner but I am hoping as the weather changes maybe the static reaction will too! Argan oil is pretty neat stuff and I really do recommend these products if you are interested in them.

Product: Tide + Febreeze Laundry Pods
Can I just say how much I love Tide? Thanks to Influenster for introducing us :)  I am one of those folks who loves when my clothes smell pretty. Yes I enjoy the fresh scent of clean clothes right out of the dryer. I love it when it lingers for days.  And I also love how convenient these pods are. I currently live in a complex setting where I have a shared laundry facility. So now instead of lugging up my detergent AND my fabric softer on top of all of my laundry, all I need to do it throw in a few pods and off I go. Super convenient folks!

The Outcome: I love how easy these pods make my life. My clothes comes out clean, smelling fresh, and soft. No more need to carry extra bottles. I recommend these if you need to frequent the laundry mat. You will thank me.

Product: Wonka Randoms Gummy Candy
Okay I needed to get this off my chest and these candies are allowing me to do it. I am a gummy addict. No joke if there were meetings I would be their number one attendee. I was super excited to get these from Smiley 360 to try and review. As you can see this is a mere photo of a photo of these bad boys. I could not contain myself and ate them all within a few days.

Outcome: I had so much fun eating these. They had all kinds of flavors and textures. Everything I could ever want in a gummy. If you are into gummies, these are for you. Find them in your local grocery store and get randomizing folks!
